Hello all and good Monday! Hope everyone had a wonderfully creative weekend, or maybe you rested. Whatever you did I hope you enjoyed it. Well, I'm home for the summer from my job and have already started to work on some long neglected projects. One thing I promised myself that I would do was to draw SOMETHING every day. I started this project on Saturday and finished it this morning. This is my rendition of the Eiffel Tower in France. I'm using it as part of a new banner I'm designing for POSITIVELY LOVELY! I want the banner to have a sort of Parisian feel to it so what better way to convey that than with a staple such as the monumental Eiffel Tower?

Hello all! Hope everyone is having a wonderfully blue(sky) Monday! I've been doing a lot of research lately into the realm of fashion illustration and have decided to try my hand at it. I also want to expand my illustration in general, but I think that I'll specialize in my two favorite areas: children and fashion. So today at lunch I tried my hand at a little doodle featuring the stunningly beautiful Scarlett Johansson.

To me, she is the epitome of old Hollywood glamor and has one of the most perfect faces in the business. So here is my rendition of a Dolce and Gabbana perfume ad featuring Ms. Scarlett herself. Hope you enjoy!

I am so honored to receive this lovely award from my friend Shirley of Shirley's Illustrations. This Renee Award is so special to me. Renee was such a wonderful person who has gone on to her transition. She was in a lot of pain, and yet she readily shared her good times as well as the bad and the very bad. We miss you, Renee.

So yes, I am honored at this special award. Shirley is also a very special person, a talented artist and one of the best friends a person can have. I appreciate you so much, Shirley, you have no idea. For you to even think of me warms my heart immensely.

So I give this award back to you Shirley, and to all of my blogger buddies who I'm sure have received this award already. I love you all and you all are very precious to me.

Hello everyone! Hope you are all enjoying the beginning of your weekends! I just wanted to say how thankful I am to all of you who have continued to visit me. I know I haven't been posting, things have been very hectic for me lately. I finally feel like I'm going to have the time I need to get back to work, though so I plan on showing some of the new work I've done.

I also want to tell you how much of an inspiration you all have been to me. I've enjoyed visiting you and seeing the wonderful work you've created. It has been a tremendous help to lifting my creative spirits and getting my juices flowing.

I have many ideas and projects rolling around in my head and hopefully, next week I can begin to get some of them out and onto paper, canvas, whatever.

Happy weekend everyone. So sorry I haven't posted for awhile, just trying to catch up on some financial situations and busy, busy, busy! So I try to write things down to hold on to them and hope that they will manifest the way that I see them in my mind.

My friend and fashion illustrator extraordinaire, Peter Breese is going to be featured at the 4th Wall Gallery in Dallas Texas on November 7th. Peter's work is both eclectic and edgy. His usage of line and color makes for sophisticated imagery; leaving just enough to the imagination, which engages the viewer in a visual call and response. Not only are we intrigued with the beautifully executed imagery but we are drawn into the white space that surrounds it.

Elephants Galore!

This is the first stanza drawing: "Colorful signs throughout the town announced a very special affair."

This one, of course has to have the color added to it, but I hope you can see the concept of the citizens of elephant town meeting with the mayor to discuss the upcoming elephant ball.

Familiar with the concept of nested gift boxes, Sandra's IMPATIENCE was growing at the thought of boxes 3, 4, 5, 6, and so on...

Boy, am I late with last week's Illustration Friday word. It took me a while to come up with a concept when I thought about the nested gift boxes. I'm sure they are not always well received, and may not be as amusing to the "giftee" as they are to the "giftor."

My First Commission

"Dare to Dream"

Hello all. Here is my first commissioned work. It's an illustration for the cover of a book. The organization is Shirley Ann Sullivan Educational Foundation (SASEF). They are dedicated to making sure that children all over the world receive a much needed education, no matter what their socio-economic status. I was moved to volunteer my services and this is the culmination of my donation to the project.

The book is entitled "Imagine If........The Millennium Development Goals Story Collection." They were very pleased with the illustration, which of course, warmed my heart.

My bestest friend, mentor, and sister, Vanessa Brantley, has graciously honored me with this great award by our mutual kindred spirit, Bella Sinclair. I am so grateful to be counted among these women as a creative spirit. Bella, as you may know, suffered a terrible loss with the sudden death of her beloved husband earlier this year. I often think of her and her daughters and pray that they are well and standing strong in God through this difficult time.

Ms. Vanessa, it's hard to explain in words how much you mean to me, but I will try. At this juncture in my life and my creative career, it is no small feat to keep going through daily obstacles. Sometimes I want to throw up my hands and be done with the whole thing, but God always manages to bring the necessary encouragement and will to go on by placing jewels in my life. You are one of those jewels. So, I thank you for this prestigious award and as they say, "right back atcha, girlie!"

There are many I wish to pass this award on to and you pretty much covered the list Nessa. But as I continue to visit more children's artist blogs, I'm sure there will be many more deserving of this wonderful award.

To all those who visit me on a regular basis and encourage and inspire, thank you.

The Elephant Ball

Hello everyone. Hope you all are having a great weekend so far.

Since I've started this blog, I have experienced so much inspiration from you all and thanks be to God, my creativity has awakened. I'm finally working on projects that I've been talking and thinking about for what seems like forever.

In the spirit of "just doing it" I say goodbye to procrastination, and hello to The Elephant Ball, a children's picture book that I wrote some years ago. As part of my portfolio, I'm giving myself certain projects and book covers are a part of my self-exploration as a children's artist and illustrator.

You'll probably see some spreads for the book later on as I continue this journey down my creative path.

So, may I introduce to you, ladies and gentlemen, The Elephant Ball.

Okay, I know I just put up this montage of my work as a new banner, but as I mentioned in another post, it's probably going to be temporary. Here is the sketch for the new permanent (at least for the moment) banner that I want to upload. I kind of like that it has the feel of a photo shoot of all my characters.

I'm experimenting again with banners. This is just a montage of images I've created but I am in the process of doing a banner which includes a number of characters in what looks like their own little photo shoot. So don't be alarmed if this particular banner is replaced by a new one in the next few days.

Aurellia was happy that Dragonia so graciously took time out of her busy schedule of fire breathing mayhem to join her for a tea party. Dragonia was thankful for the invitation and even helped out by heating up the water for tea.

This drawing was a lot of fun to do. It's really an experiment, I wrote a synopsis years ago for a children's book entitled Aurellia and the Dragon. Dragonia is Aurellia's imaginery friend from fairytale land. This is the first in the series of drawings. They may change over the course of the series as I gain more experience in conceptual development. In the meantime, enjoy, and have some tea, won't you?

I'm beginning to love Illustration Friday. I had a different illo in mind when I received the email with the theme. But when I looked at the word WORN again, this image flashed before my eyes. I hope you like it.

Roald Dahl's Revolting Rhyme

Hello everyone and Happy Friday! As a fledgling children's book illustrator, I have come to really appreciate my sisters Vanessa Brantley Newman and Loredan Avery, proprietors of the lovely and whimsical blog, Wibbly Wobbly Woods. After visiting the blog numerous times, I realize and am grateful for the opportunity it affords me to stretch myself both as an artist and a storyteller.

The recent prompt was to illustrate one of Roald Dahl's Revolting Rhyme's, Snow White. We had the choice of either developing a character through various sketches, creating a spread, or doing a book cover. What started for me as a spread turned into a cover. Thanks again to the brilliant Vanessa Brantley Newman of Ooh La La Design Studio for her critique of my work and giving me pointers on how to experiment and really allow my creative juices to flow.

So here's the passage I illustrated. Enjoy!

Then suddenly, one awful day,
She heard the Magic Mirror say,
'From now on, Queen, you're Number Two.
'Snow-White is prettier than you!'
The Queen went absolutely wild.
She yelled, 'I'm going to scrag that child!'
'I'll cook her flaming goose! I'll skin'er!
'I'll have her rotten guts for dinner!'
She called the Huntsman to her study.
She shouted at him, 'Listen buddy!'
'You drag that filthy girl outside,
'and see that you take her for a ride!
'Thereafter slit her ribs apart
'And bring me back her bleeding heart!'

Daddy, 1995

Hello all my blog buddies. Just wanted to wish all of the men in your lives as well as all of the men who may visit my blog a very Happy Father's Day. In remembrance of my own Father, I'm posting this sketch I did of him at the age of 75 back in 1995.
Daddy passed away in 2001 of complications due to diabetes and Alzheimer's Disease. I was very happy to find this sketch and I hope you all like it.

Drifting along in the choppy waters of the Sea of Inspiration, she contemplates the choices she's made in the past and her final decision to leave her fear behind. Unable to turn back, she has launched out into the deep.

This image for today's Illustration Friday theme, Drifting, is indicative of my final decision to go after the dream and to no longer bury in the sand the gifts and talents that God has given me.

Okay, so here's one of my preliminary character studies. Her name is Afrotigua and she's a dancing 60's Shaga-Diva! I based her on Beyonce's character, Foxy Cleopatra, from the Austin Power's film, Goldmember. She's also a throwback to the 70's Blaxploitation films and she's fastly becoming my favorite. We'll see how she turns out!
